My Role
Millennial Times began as my Design Thesis in 2017, and evolved into a greater brand and product. This idea emerged from my personal experience with social networking technologies and the challenging relationship I have with these platforms. I wanted to share the reality of these obstacles with a light-hearted perspective to inform my readers while also providing some comic relief. After a multitude of concept pitches to our professors and peers, I built the product from design to implementation including: rough sketches, hand-drawn pen illustration, branding design, logo and brand identity, newspaper print layout, and gallery installation.
Logo & Brand Identity
The Logo and Brand mascot: "Mr. Millennial" is the personification of the Millennial Times publication. He is a character who doesn’t fit societal norms and is overwhelmed by rapidly evolving technology. A bit of an outcast, Mr. Millennial is identifiable and relatable to consumers -- He dislikes social media and fears the effects of overused technology. This resonates with anyone who suffers the consequences of our growing dependence on social media including social anxiety, alienation and isolation. Mr. Millennial humanizes the brand and the logo conveys anonymity to connect with a diverse audience.
Cartoon & Illustration
Designed satirical cartoons through hand illustration to provide comic relief for generally serious topics in newspaper articles.
The Newspaper Articles
Incorporated newspaper articles highlighting the human impact of the overuse of modern technology and the damaging effects of social media.
Web Interface Design
Converted newspaper print design into a digital publication. Created a digital brand identity that includes hand-drawn iconography, distinctive font and color palette, and scalable visual frameworks that are engaging to readers.
Gallery Installation
For my 2017 Thesis Project, I held a gallery installation at Mason Gross Galleries to distribute the print newspaper and showcase my work. Mason Gross Galleries is a 4,200-square-foot venue in the heart of New Brunswick’s arts district exclusively dedicated to showcasing graduate and undergraduate student work. The space features up to 10 exhibitions each year, all free and open to the public. The gallery acts as a laboratory for new work across media and concentrations, providing a platform for expression and experimentation.
